The Gay Pride parades you see across the world in the month of June have their roots in the Stonewall riot of 1969.

On June 28th, 1969, after an early morning raid, those arrested decided to protest and fight back against being arrested because of their sexual orientation. This sparked other protests and a wakeup call to LGBT individuals across the nation. Soon LGBT organizations started springing up across the country demanding civil rights and an end to discrimination because of sexual orientation.

Today, Pride is celebrated throughout the world and with parades and associated events that take place throughout the week. Throughout the last 50 years, Pride Day has evolved from that angry and violent riot at Stonewall to a celebration of accepting and being proud of who you are.
